Overview
The arrival of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1828 connected Canton to larger markets and sparked industrial growth. The discovery of coal in the area further accelerated industrialization. By the late 19th century, Canton had become a significant manufacturing center with numerous factories producing diverse goods from watches to agricultural implements.
