Overview
Canton was founded in 1805 by Bezaleel Wells, who named it after Canton (Guangzhou), China. The settlement grew slowly at first, with agriculture being the primary economic activity. The selection of nearby Canton as the county seat for the newly formed Stark County helped establish the community as a regional center.
